“Every time I paint the icon of a Saint, I believe it is an opportunity to make the invisible world visible.”

– Tom Clark, Iconographer

About Tom Clark

Tom Clark has been painting churches and portable icons for the past 42 years. He is grateful now to be collaborating with his sons, who continue this sacred work in mosaic. Tom continues to write the stories of our faith in paint on the interiors of churches, while his sons use his icons as the foundation for their mosaic art on both interior and exterior walls.

“For me, the greatest teachers are the icons themselves. I have two obligations. I have to be true to what God wants me to say, following Tradition. At the same time, I have to speak to my time and place in history.”

Project Spotlight: The Archangel Michael

Greek Orthodox Church | Port Washington, NY

The Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church is the Church That Never Sleeps.

The Iconographer can attest to this through his own unpredictable hours spent high on the scaffolding or working late into the night in a makeshift studio tucked into the choir loft.

Life at The Archangel Michael moved constantly: twenty-one basketball teams filling the gym, GOYANS gathering at midnight on Friday nights before heading into Manhattan to feed the homeless, Saturday Challenge Liturgies followed by crowded luncheons, Greek School students flying kites on Clean Monday, and countless other moments woven into the life of the parish.

In the midst of all this movement, prayer, service, and community, the walls of the church slowly came to life in paint and gold.

Project Spotlight: St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church | Tacoma, Washington

The dome of St. Nicholas was conceived on a winding ballroom staircase at the 2008 Clergy-Laity Congress.

With no tables available, an elegant couple sat balancing dinner trays on their laps when Tom approached and asked if he could “join their table”. What began as a simple conversation turned into an evening of shared stories about faith, family, and vocation.

Before the night ended, they handed Tom the contact information for the Iconography Chairman. Soon afterward, he was commissioned to paint the Dome and the Life of St. Nicholas in Tacoma, Washington.

For over four decades, moments like these have quietly shaped the path of Tom’s work — one conversation, one friendship, and one church at a time.
